Fracture mechanics software from Abaqus and Boeing extends virtual testing potential for composites

A recent announcement by Abaqus Inc, a leading provider of software for advanced finite element analysis (FEA), and Boeing Intellectual Property Business brings to light a new application for an analytical software method that has been around for almost 30 years: the Virtual Crack Closure Technique (VCCT). When used as an extension of FEA, VCCT helps aircraft designers understand the fracture mechanics of advanced composites under load—from the onset of damage to the prediction of crack growth, as well as the effect on original and residual structural strength.
