Direct in-line filament winding

PlastiComp LLC, USA, has developed direct inline filament winding (D-FW) of fibre reinforced thermoplastic compounds. PlastiComp’s pultrusion process enables the company to introduce DFW materials that offer improved benefits to customers at a significantly lower cost compared to competitive products.

Unlike precompounded thermoplastic filament winding materials, the company’s D-FWtechnology allows customers to customize their filament wound product by easily changing the colour, fibre content, polymer or fibre used in the process, PlastiComp says.

Additionally, the speed at which the process can be run allows the user the ability to significantly increase output, thus reducing costs. The process can be used for a variety of applications, ranging from sporting good products, such as baseball bats, to industrial products including pipes and tanks.

PlastiComp LLC President and Chief Executive Officer, Steve Bowen, says “Our new D-FW technology has created unlimited possibilities as customers can now take advantage of the freedom of formulation and processing speed that this technology provides.”

Thermoplastic composite materials offer excellent strength-to-weight ratios and good resin uniformity in finished parts that are circular in shape.

PlastiComp offers the full-range of research and development services relating to its direct inline roving materials including part moulding, materials testing, formula development, data collection and technology licensing.
